New And Notable Upstate

This summer, delight your senses with a visit to these special spots for dining, shopping, and taking in art (sometimes all at once!).

The Hudson Valley and Catskills are awash with new and noteworthy openings. Our latest roundup of new businesses offers a variety of experiences thanks to the unique passions of their owners. From locally made salumi that transports you to Italy, to a general store that offers haircuts and tattoos, these must-visit spots will feel familiar, yet delightfully original.

 Foreland

Foreland is an impressive new contemporary arts campus in a gut-renovated mill along the banks of the Catskill Creek. The sprawling 85,000 square foot destination includes galleries, artist studios, collective workspaces, and more. All resources and programs are designed for artists by artists with an emphasis on inclusion and diversity. Don’t miss: This summer Foreland is participating in Upstate Art Weekend with a performance, as well as hosting numerous gallery exhibitions. Follow along @forelandcatskill

Quinnie’s

Quinnie’s a family-friendly, counter-service restaurant and market housed in a converted farmhouse on Route 66. Started by Quinn Levine and her husband, Simon Burstall, the menu was created in collaboration with Chef Amy Hess (Northern Spy Food Co, The Breslin) and focuses on mouthwatering sandwiches packed with local ingredients. Don’t miss: The chicken salad sandwich (described as: crispy chicken skin, celery, and dill on schmaltzy pullman bread) — best enjoyed at a picnic table on a warm afternoon. Good Night

Good Night, the new sister restaurant of farm-to-table favorite Silvia, brings South East Asian cuisine to Woodstock in a beautifully restored historic building. From crispy blowfish to walnut larb, each dish from Chef and Co-Owner, Doris Choi, is vibrant and nuanced. Don’t miss: Settling in for a romantic evening at the curved bar, made of Italian marble, the focal point of the dining room. Follow along @goodnight_15rockcity

La Salumina

This artisanal charcuterie and food market brings a taste of Tuscany to the hamlet of Hurleyville. Owners Eleanor Friedman and Gianpiero Pepe work with local, sustainable farmers and make salumi on site using century-old techniques. They also carry a breadth of delectable, hard-to-find Italian products like sea urchin pulp and pine cone bud syrup. Don’t miss: Their delicious, house-made focaccia, only available on Sundays. Homestedt

Homestedt shop and showroom in Livingston Manor is an extension of the interior design studio and nature experience company of the same name. The curation of homewares, outdoor gear, and local products nod to their motto — “doing things beats buying things”— and owner Tom Roberts is often on hand to talk fly fishing or give local tips. Don’t miss: Their custom-designed Catskills merch (like baseball caps and sweatshirts) make perfect souvenirs or gifts. Follow along @homestedt

Kaaterskill Market

Located in a sunny storefront on Main Street in the town of Catskill, Kaaterskill Market is a destination for ethically made, sustainable, home goods. From cleaning supplies to self-care products, owner Katie Hartsough’s thoughtful curation illustrates how beautiful, functional objects can inspire intentional living.
